jane

Hi, can anyone tell me, if I buy a UK version of microsoft
xp pro o/s, will it work just as well when (clean)
installed on a computer I intend to buy when I move to
Brazil.
Also, was thinking of buying on ebay, the cheaper ones are
stated to be for use with a brand such as compac or dell,
but the advertisers state they will work on any computer?
True / False, Good idea / Bad idea ??

Yes, it'll work just fine. Of course you can always set up the
computer to dual boot between the English version and the
Portuguese version. (If you understand Portuguese)

Well of COURSE you can use any software you want on ANY machine anywhere in
the world as long as the machine is capable of running it. Software doesn't
just "not work" from country to country........

Yes - provided the machine is a 'generic' design and not strongly
customised with proprietary hardware (as eg Compaq are). That is not a
matter specific to Brazil. Only point is that the keyboard layout of
such a machine would probably be a Portuguese (Brazil) one, - but
keyboards are cheap, and the UK version of Windows will have drivers for
any layout

They quite possibly would not work on machines other than by those
makers and are probably scams if they have been removed from them - such
copies are licensed by Microsoft to the computer makers solely for use
on the machines that they sell. So these may be outright stolen goods.
So called OEM ones sold with hardware are all right, but may only be
used on the initial machine. I would advise playing safe

It should, no problem. The real concerns taking a computer abroad are
power and telephone connection.

The first tier manufacturers usually don't distribute install discs
for their systems, but restore discs, which are good only for that
brand, if not model or line. Also, they don't sell their OS licenses
outside of new PCs. The only OEM license and software you can to an
extent legally buy, is ones sold to generic "white-box" builders.
