Is it possible to downgrade an existing install of XP Pro
to XP Home? I cannot imagine anyone wanting to, but all
the same - can it be done?

No, one cannot "downgrade" XP Pro to XP Home. A reformat
of the drive and "clean install" of XP Home is required.

That is not correct, you can't do this no matter what kind of XP home disk
you have.

certainly can, insert CD, remove partition, create partition, format and
install.

Would you be able to explain why?
I would like to know the answer.

Thanks, SunSpot

Effectively, XP home IS XP pro, but without a few of the more exotic bells
and whistles. The core program is the same, so it's not a "downgrade" in the
accepted sense of the word.

The OP wants to DOWNGRADE Pro to Home.
This cannot be done.
What you are describing is a clean install, which is NOT what he wanted to
do.

Easy, you cannot downgrade any version of Windows.
The only way to go from a newer version or pro version of windows to an
older or Home version is a clean install. This means formatting the drive or
deleting the partition and starting from scratch, re-installing all
applications as needed.

Depends on the usage of "downgrade" - can mean just changing to a lower spec
OS. Doesn't HAVE to mean "changing to a lower grade OS without reformating"

Yes. But I'd zero the drive first.

Only by formatting and installing clean
