xp pro takes forever to shut down

we have windows xp pro just recently installed on our computer. for some
reason, it takes forever to shut down, but it used to shut down normally up
till about 3 days ago. Once its in the shut down mode, nothing else can be
done until it actually does shut down. it starts up fine, just the shutting
down. We go to start, then shutdown like we are supposed to, but can't
understand what could be happening. Deleted internet files, cookies, did a
norton systems clean, but don't know if that would help or not. thanks for
any help

Here is a link to an excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

Please note that most problems with Windows refusing to shutdown is
because of malware running in the background. Scan with your current
version antivirus (not earlier than 2004) using updated definitions in
Safe Mode. After you have completed that, continue to scan for
non-viral malware with free programs like Ad-aware and Spybot Search &
Destroy. Install these programs, update them, and do the scans in Safe
Mode.

Check and make sure you don't have any hardware conflicts. You can
also check for unnessary installed or outdated drives.

GOOD LUCK.
