Shutdown takes forever

On an otherwise stable installation of XP Pro, shutting down this PC is an
interminable procedure:

- It will take over two minutes from the time that the command is issued
until windows start closing

- Closing Network connections takes another two minutes

- And the screen entitled Windows is Shutting Down sometimes hangs forever.

As a baseline, with a completely fresh session of Windows (start up and then
immediately shut down), I get to the Windows is Shutting Down screen in
about five seconds and that screen remains visible for about 20-30 seconds.

Is there a shutdown log like there is a startup log so I can figure out what
is going on...?

Here's an excellent shutdown troubleshooter with lots of information to
help you:

Has the computer been set up to clear the pagefile at Shutdown. If yes
resetting it not to clear may make a significant reduction in the time
taken to Shutdown.

The data value for not clearing is 0. You would be reversing the process
described here:
How to Clear the Windows Paging File at Shutdown
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314834

To access Registry Editor select Start, Run, type "regedit" without the
quotes and hit ENTER.

Before making any changes create a Restore Point using System Restore as
a precaution if anything goes wrong. You can then use the Restore Point
to put the Registry back as it was if needed.

To make the Change right click on the name ClearPageFileonShutdown and
change 1 to 0.

Hope this helps.
