XP Pro stops responding

Hi, I'm having trouble with XP Pro, it seems to randomly
stop responding. I'll be using it perfectly for a while,
then the mouse pointer just freezes on the screen and I
have to reset. I have recently installed a new
motherboard, processor and memory, and reinstalled XP.
I've tried system restore and a full repair of XP from
the disk, but to no avail. I cannot define what triggers
the freezing, as sometimes it will work all evening fine,
and other times it will freeze about 10 sec after
booting. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You are not alone on this issue. It would seem to be
related to a security patch issued about 4 weeks ago. I
know of three machines locally (only 20 computers in the
whole town) that have this same problem including my own.
Ordinarily I would say that this is a driver issue but I
have installed five different drivers for my mouse in an
attempt to stop this. I have looked everywhere and the
system does not record anything about this problem
anywhere. It seems that though the lockup is obvious the
machine doesn't even know that it locked up and there is
no record in any log at all about the problem. As yet no
fix. The lockup is random and is not caused by any
particular event like opening multiple windows or
regediting. There is simply no pattern. Sorry I couldn't
be of more help but I can't trace the problem nor the
patch that initiated this behavior about a month ago. Have
fun.

Thanks for the information, what you describe sounds exactly the same
problem. At least now I know it's not just a problem with my computer, and
unlikely to be a fault with my new hardware.

I installed XP recently and then updated with the critical updates. I have the same problem exactly. Did you ever figure out which patch it was ? Did you fix it by reinstalling without applying all patches ?

Have any of you found the culprit

I've nailed it down to a duff connection setup between the server and the PC
but no blighter seems to provide information on how to do it properly. Not
microsoft - not the server people - nobody.
