XP Pro SP2 will not reboot after failed Windows update installatio

I was prompted to install a Windows update that auto-downloaded yesterday.
Installation failed, and I attempted to restart the machine. System will not
successfully restart, but displays a DOS like message on a black screen that
says Windows has failed to restart and give me 5 options:
Start in SAFE mode (3 options), start like the last succesful restart, or
start normally.
All optons just result in circling back to the above message.
Inserting retail XP Pro disk and attempting to reboot from disk also fails.
Any thoughts?
