xp pro sp2 & nav2005 bootup problem

what a idiot

just installed nav2005 on new pc with Win XP Pro SP2, which was
running fine, during install it recommended that i used its firewall
protection rather than xp's so i agreed to this. Installed all nav
updates etc on the LAN, rebooted ok twice, then remembered that i
needed to create a dialup connection did not think but turned on xp's
firewall!!!! rebooted pc however it wont boot into windows... goes to
a logon screen, i log on (which i did not have to do before) starts
to load personal settings then says saving settings and we end up at
logon screen again. I have removed modem removed NIC tried safe mode
no joy. anyone any ideas other than that was a stupid thing to
do?????

Have you tried "last known good configuration"?
Also, I know a lot of computers that have Norton AND the Windows firewall
turned on, and I've never heard of any such conflicts. You can do a repair
install in about an hour, which might be quicker than tearing out your hair
out trying to figure out a better way. Especially if you can't get into
Windows in either Normal or Safe Mode. Come to think of it, Norton wouldn't
even load in Safe Mode. I'm wondering if your problem lies elsewhere.

I once had a similar problem, only it was Zone Alarm rather than Norton and
it was definitely a firewall-related problem. I eventually "solved" the
problem by uninstalling Zone Alarm, rebooting, reinstalling Zone Alarm,
turning off the Windows firewall, and THEN rebooting.

In any event, I ended up using Zone Alarm for only four days before it
started causing me major problems. I ended up uninstalling again, this time
for good. IMO, and in fairness it is a minority opinion but I have years of
personally experience to back me up, with XP you are better off with SP2 and
the Windows Firewall than with any third party firewall. I have never had a
security breach using the Windows Firewall, and it has otherwise never given
me any kind of problem. Meanwhile, I avoid the software conflicts and other
performance and stability hits that can come with using any third party
software that attempts to alter or change the way the underlying OS is
supposed to work.

Did you remove any spyware during that period after installing but
before restarting where the problem happened?
