XP Pro slow shutdown

I did a clean install of XP Pro on a new system and it works fine but
shutdown is extremely slow. Boot up is fast but when I tell it to
shut down it takes up to 5 minutes for it to finally shut off. There
are no error messages. I tried turning off the virus scanner,
firewall, etc. first but it doesn't make any difference. The new
system is one I built with an FIC motherboard and 2.0GHz Celeron
processor. It works great except for the slow shutdown. Is there a
setting for this?

Thanks!

I know of 2 programs that really slow down the shut down of a WinXP machine:
"Privacy Eraser" and "Internet & Windows Cleaner".
Uninstalling them does not solve the problem because they screw something up
into the registry with repect to the swap-file cleaning at shut down.
You will have to repair a registry entree manually.
Post back if this is likely to be your problem, I'll give you the registry
changes that you have to do.

This is a symptom of the "clear pagefile on shutdown"
option in useless programs like "TweakUI" If you ever
enable this option in any of the third party programs that
have it then uncheck it. What "Clear Pagefile on shutdown"
actually does is to overwrite your existing pagefile with
0's. This take a long long time and is not really needed.
The pagefile is deleted and recreated at shutdown and
bootup under normal conditions. If you are doing something
very very illegal then "Clear Pagefile On Shutdown" may be
an added safety feature for you. Have fun.

I checked Pagefile and it's disabled. I don't have any of the
hardware mentioned in the links that are known to cause problems. I
do have a Radeon AGP video card. The software for it, ATI
Hydravision, does load at startup and has an icon on the taskbar. It
is the only thing I haven't shut down before shutdown because it
doesn't have the option to close and I can't find the option in the
software. That might be my problem so I might have to live with it.

Try going to Start>Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes) then go to
the tab that says "Startup"
From here uncheck items and reboot to see if by removing any of them solves
the problem. This may take a little time as you need to check them all, but
a little trouble shooting may help solve your problem.
It is probably the Hydravision! I have had MANY problems with that
application on many different computers.

Post back and let us know!

I think I might have found the problem. I have a Logitech USB/PS2
keyboard. I put the PS2 adapter on the USB plug and plugged it into
the PS2 port. The shutdown was considerably faster after doing that.

Try updating the drivers for it
