XP Pro Slipstreamed CD

If I create an XP slipstreamed CD to contain SP2, can it be used as a tool
for anyone to install XP? By that I mean anyone who provides their own MS
product key during installation. Or, is there something on the disk which
would only allow it to work with the specific product key for the disk from
which the slipstreamed CD was made?

Yes, as long as you keep to the same type. Retail key for a retail CD. OEM
key for and OEM disc. MSDN key for an MSDN disc and so on ..

So if you had a retail key and used a retail disc to create a new
slipstreamed CD, the key would still work with the created disc. But if you
had substituted an OEM disc then no that key would not work.

If it's a full retail (not Hell, Comcrap, Hewlett Smackards, Fakeways)
install it wouldn't be a problem at all as the install will prompt for a
key insert.........

Both the Product Key and the CD used must match with respect to:

- Windows Edition (Pro, Home, Tablet, Media Center)
- Windows Version (Retail Upgrade, Retail Full Install, OEM, Volume
License, etc.)
- Language. (English, French, Spanish, etc etc)

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck

Thanks. I tried this for a friend in an effort to speed up his reinstall of
XP Pro. I made a slipstreamed disk and let him try it out. He had an OEM
disk and his key wouldn't work with the CD I provided. He ultimately had to
reinstall with his OEM disk and then go through the SP2 upgrade. I didn't
realize the disks wouldn't accept different classes of keys.

Got it now but I didn't realize the distinctions prior to this. I tried to
help a friend out and speed up his XP Pro reinstall for his onsite business
computer. I made the SP2 CD from my XP Pro retail version and while the
edition and language types matched, his product code was OEM. Now I know
why it didn't work! I suppose what I could have done is taken his OEM CD
and made a new one with the SP2 slipstreamed.

Yes since your version is different than his the way to do it was
slipstream SP2 into his version.
