XP Pro Search Broken

A few days ago the local Search feature worked fine. Now
when I do Start, Search my system hangs for about 15 - 30
seconds and after the hang nothing happens??

Stop Indexing service.
start > control panel > Administrative Tools >services > Double click
services > choose indexing service > double click > properties > stop.
Disable from status type box
