Hi forum,
I'm having some problems with mobile users on Xp pro Sp2. At the office my
users are part of the office domain, but when they are outside the office
there is -of course - no connection to the domain controller, which makes
the login fail.

There is only one user profile - the one refering to the domain. When trying
to logon outside the office, Xp hangs and a reboot is needed. In Event viewer
I get some error messages (event id 15 and 1517)..

Is there a way to fix this...do I need to setup something on the portable
computers?

I've tried to look for the answer on google, technet and Ms KB but so far no
luck..
Cheers,
Peter

Peter,

they should get the message that the domain server cannot be
found, but the computer should then automatically use cached
credentials to log them on anyway.

What do the error messages say?

Hi Hans-Georg,
The error messages in Event Viewer says the following:

SYSTEM LOG:

NETLOGON:
Event ID: 5719
There is no connection to a domain controller for <the domain which my
laptop is member of>. At the moment there is no logon server available to
serve the logon request. Make sure the computer is connected to the domain
and try again, if the problem persist contact the administrator.

PROGRAM LOG:

AutoEnrollment:
event id: 15
The automatic certification registration of the local system could not
contact Active directory (0x8007054b). Either the specified domain is not
existing or there was no connection to the domain. Registration will not be
performed.

Note: since the domain is NT server 4.0 there is no active directory
running?!?

Userenv:
event id: 1517
The registry database for user DKCPHP02\Peter was saved when a program or
service used it, when logof was performed. The memory used by the users
registry database was not freed. The registry databas will be removed when no
loger in use.
This is in most cases due to services, running as a useraccount. Try to
configure the services to run as LocalService or NetworkService.

- I can only get to these messages when loggin on as a local account (admin)
since the system freezes up right after logon. Besides the problems listed
above I also get some errors from F-secure Backweb - which keeps my Antivirus
uptodate.

Thanks,
Peter

Peter,

those errors only indicate that the domain controller isn't
there, but they don't indicate why the computer doesn't work
anyway. As I already wrote, normally the computer then uses
cached credentials to log you on.

I don't know very much about domains, but perhaps there is a
policy preventing the cached logon.

Nearly everybody has this. I run a small service on my computers
that solves this problem. Please ask again if you want that too,
but it has nothing to do with your problem.

I cannot pinpoint the cause. I can only recommend general
measures. I would first scan the computer for spyware (for
example, using SpyBot) and viruses, then I'd go through the
Winsock repair procedure outlined in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

If all else fails, I'd do a repair installation of Windows XP.

Hi Hans-Georg,
I think you're kind led me on the way... You wrote that the cached logon
might be non-functioning, so I decided to disable and re-enable offline files
in XP pro... that seemed to do the trick.

Cheers,
Peter

Peter,

thanks a lot! I'll add this to my page and add your name as
well. If you don't like that, please let me know and I'll edit
it to your liking.

Hello:

I am having the same problem with my computer. How did you disable and
enable the offline files? I am not too good with xp.
