XP Pro-- missing window buttons on taskbar

What can I do the make the window buttons reappear on the taskbar?

My son is using XP Pro on a Dell laptop and came home this weekend with a
new problem. Whenever a window is minimized the button on the taskbar is
missing. Actually they are not there even with the window maximized. I can
still get the window back with alt-tab but he is in need of the normal way
with the buttons at the bottom of the screen. I have searched the help and
support records and have not found a solution. I was going to reinstall
Windows but his XP disk when started says this is an older version of
windows and if I install all settings, etc. will be lost. I assume this is
because of SP 2 being installed.
