Right, 2nd try since no useful info came out from the 1st
one:
My XP pro gets stuck about 15 seconds after the login
prompt appears. I can get to desktop if I login fast
enough but then the user interface totally stops. Safe
mode works and in normal mode there is some disk and LAN
activity even after the interface has stopped responding.
AND when resetting my PC after being stuck for 5 minutes
the CPU temperature is about 5 degrees (C) higher than
after running an hour in safe mode (so something is going
on). Oh, and I added taskmgr to HKLM/.../Run in registry
and at the time it gets stuck it shows that services.exe
is taking 98% of processor time and task manager itself
2%. After the PC gets stuck it is no longer updated. Any
ideas what the problem might be? I had it running for
almost a year now without any problems before this!
What I have tried so far:
1) Run three different virus scanners -> nothing
2) Run two different spyware removal programs -> no change
3) Tried removing some startup programs -> nothing except
that the time before windows get stuck becomes shorter
4) Tried using msconfig to remove everyting during the
startup (win.ini, system.ini, boot.ini, services AND
startup programs) -> no change except windows the never
has time to get to the desktop (see 3)
5) Tried running SFC -> doesn't work in safe mode
6) Tested the memory -> no errors
7) Changed the memory -> no change
8) Tried to run in VGA mode -> no change
9) Updated BIOS and ALL the drivers -> no change
10) Downloaded all windows updates -> no change
11) Compared bootlogs from safe mode and normal mode ->
nothing different at the end (and even tried disabling
some services that were run in normal mode)
12) Cleaned up registry (mainly to remove services that
are no longer used) -> no change
13) Run scandisk -> no change and no problems
14) Cursed and kicked my PC -> no change
What I haven't tried so far are:
1) Repair installation of XP
2) FDISK + reinstall everything (NO! 100GB of data to
backup!)
3) Any others?
And before I get the same nVidia video driver problem
hint, here is my setup:
AMD XP 2700+, Epox 8RDA+ (nForce 2), 768MB Corsair XMS
DDR, ATI Radeon 9700pro, 160GB+120GB Seagate Barracuda V
and IV, LG DVD +/-rw, Enermax 460W PS
