for no apparent reason, xp pro keeps freezing.

i have all the updates (including sp 1) and the problem does not appear to be program specific. i can leave my pc running not connected to the internet and no programs running, yet after a while (not time specific either) it will freeze up.

please help

Random locking up is usually related to hardware - overheating or a
faulty component. Here are generic troubleshooting steps for hardware:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing); 2) test
the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test run
for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the mftr.; 4) the power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for
the devices you have in the system; 5) test the motherboard with
something like TuffTest from www.tufftest.com. Testing hardware
failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with known-good
parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable
opening your computer, take the machine to a good local computer repair
shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).

If you'd like more help, then please repost with some details of your
system and what you've already done to troubleshoot.

Cheers,

Malke

Could be the video card drivers. Do you have the XP or
XP Pro drivers for the video card?

One thing to test - because it is quite often the cause and is easy to
check: it may be a result of the mouse driver and the video driver
arguing over which controls the pointer. To check on this - Control
Panel - Display - Settings, Click Advanced, and on the Troubleshoot page
reduce the acceleration slider one notch or two. If one does it, there
is negligible loss of performance: if two are needed look for updated
video drivers from the maker's site.

Defective memory (RAM) is a frequent cause.
Use Google to find MemTest 86, and use it as a
test utility.

check your processor TEMPATURE. make sure it is between
30-60 degrees celcious. if it is way high. check the
processor fan to make sure it is opperating properly, if
so, check the heatsinks to make sure they are applied
correctly.

i have ran into the same problem as you, completely
unexplained freezing... processor was running 86 degress
celcious.... thats hot!

hope that helps.
