XP Pro - Inherited Permissions lost ?

Using XP Pro on network. We have [accidentally] removed inherited
permissions from users in a folder where there are a large number of
users and a large number of folders and files. Is there any way I can
recover the inherited permissions? This is causing a problem as I add
new users as they do not get access to all the folders they need - and
we are resorting to adding them to each folder and subfolder manually.
All users are shown as having access to the root folder but I just
can't seem to propagate new user permissions down to subfolders and
files. I think this is because the inheritance was lost? The option for
a user "Apply Into" ... All Folders and Subfolders etc does not seem to
make any difference. Any help would be gratefully received.

You can try check the box for inheriting permissions again and then set
needed permissions to see if that helps. If you have a backup of the folder
you can also try restoring it from backup. Beyond that there are tools such
as xcacls.vbs and fileacl that allow extremely flexible options for
assigning permissions and forcing inheritance but these are very powerful
tools and if you use them incorrectly you can mess things up further so
always practice using new tools on a test computer and do backups before
modifying a production computer. --- Steve
