XP Pro: How to turn off day of week in system tray?

My Win XP Pro shows the time, day of week and date in the system tray.
How do I change it to show only the time? Win 98 used to do this but I
understand WinXP is a completely different codebase.

You may have your taskbar set to Three Levels. Drag it down to one level and
it will only show the time.

Thanks. My taskbar is on the right side of my screen. I can make it
thinner, but then I can't read the words in the running programs, but
the time does go down to just the hours and minutes, which is what I
kind of want. Is there a way to have a thicker taskbar with just the
hours and minutes in the system tray?

I did not seem to find a way to make the system tray shorter when moving
my cursor around the border of the system tray.

There's something else going on: it's not as simple as you say. For
instance, my taskbar is one level, but in it I get time of day and
day of week. If I increase it to two levels (not three), I get date
on the third level.

This is native Win XP Pro SP2, no third-party clock.

A: Maybe because some people are too annoyed by top posting.
Q: Why do I not get an answer to my question(s)?
A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

You're right. Other settings can come into play: XP style vs classic;
locked/unlocked taskbar; large/small icons in Quick Launch; single or
multiple row taskbar....

As far as I know an XP taskbar positioned on a vertical edge of the screen
will show date, time and day. Maybe a third party program can change what
is and what is not displayed but have never tried any.

Yes, my taskbar is vertical and the systray shows time, date of week,
and date. When I move it to a horizontal position (top or bottom) the
system tray only shows the time. I am unable to find a way, in a
vertical task bar, to show only the time.

I thought someone might know a registry key to change.
