XP Pro hangs on startup

I utilised the XP feature to cleanup unused desktop icons, for which it
cleaned up 7 icons. Ever since then, when it boots up it only goes as far as
the blue windows screen (not fatal error blue screen, but the one just before
the user log on screen). As this was the only thing that had changed with the
system, I have even tried to reverse the changes using DOS but it still hangs
on boot up. The system is an HP Omnibook xe4500, 1.7Ghz P4M with 512 MB RAM
running XP Pro. I have read that this could be an issue, but am now unable to
relocate that web page again.
Any takers?
Thanks, MarkyB

When you get as far as the blue screen, if you press ctrl-alt-del do you get
taskmanager. If you do try file>run and type explorer.exe the click ok.
Otherwise will the PC start in safemode, you can try system restore from
there.

Kindly expand on "I have even tried to reverse the changes using DOS".

See if you can get to a selective bootup menu, then select "Last Known Good Configuration".
Reboot the pc, and right away start tapping & repeat tapping the F8 Function key.

Once you login ok, and do a quick look-see, I would suggest you do a logoff & restart.

I used an NTFS4DOS boot disk and copied the icons from the Unused Icons
folder back to the desktop. I have also tried to boot into safe mode, but
still the same. Last Good Configuration also produces the same result, still
can't get past the blue logo screen (with tthe two darker blue bands top and
bottom) prio to log on screen.

Ctrl+Alt+Del from here doesn't work.

Sorry Neil, Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. If I boot into Safe Mode with command
prompt the last two drivers I can see before windows tries to start is
Mup.sys and ALiAGP.sys in that order. Does this help any more?
