XP Pro frozen on start-up

Hi, Can anyone pls help with this problem. When starting-up the screen gets
to black background, XP logo and the small blue squares running across.
After that it normally goes black and loads the desktop but my problem is
that it goes black and then comes up with light blue screen with dark blue
bands at top and bottom with XP logo in the middle and does not go any
further. The weird thing is that you can move the mouse pointer but thats
all. Does exactly the same in safe mode and won't go any further. Have
loaded the CD and pressed R to repair - no change. Also loaded recovery
console and chkdsk /r but still no change. Can anyone help - it would be
much appreciated - thanks.

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the
setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it will go into a setup loop, and you
will lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you do a Upgrade setup from CD
(that lacks sp2 on it.)
