All folders on C drive come up read only.
I can change them.
But if I check them again they are all read only again.
The existing files inside are not read only anymore.
But I am having problems with some batch files writing to
other folders, and require read/write/exec privilage

How can I keep the folders from switching back to read
only ?

How do you know they are read only. Windows won't tell you, it only tells you about files and only allows changing for files.

Read only has no defined behaviour when applied to a folder. That is file systems ignore read only on folders.

From an earlier post by Purplehaz:

"XP just marks all folders read-only by default, BUT, the folders are not
read-only and should work as normal. Just ignore the read-only mark. If
you have a piece of software that is having probs writing to a folder then
try to get an xp compatible version of the program. Or post the exact
probs your having. Most likely if it is a well written app then is it not
the
read-only check box, more likely a permissions setting."

Here is some info on it:

XP makes folders read-only by design. In XP the read only attribute
is only used by explorer to see if the folder is a special or a system
folder. Read up on it:
For XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326549
or for other win versions:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256614

File permissions info:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q308418

I guess you're right about that.
NT had a glitch a while back where changing the file
properties at the folder level would chage the properties
option "shown" at the folder level , but without actually
changing the file properties. All files had to be
specifically selected to change their properties.
What I'm seeing is a little differet.
I expected the folder properties to show that all of the
files in those folders were already read/write.

Expecting too much ?

The ability to alter System attribute was removed in 95/NT4, the ability to alter Read Only on folders was removed in XP (as there is no need to ever change.

I attached 4 files. Two vbs can go into Sendto folder, this allows reporting and changing of Read Only and System.

The other two adds a line to the infotip and Tiles view listing the attributes. If no attributes are set you see nothing different. Also Tiles have a three line limit and it will often be the 4th line on some files (those whose names take up two lines).

Thanks David...
I didn't reaize the e-mail address was optional.
I'm getting SPAM and viruses e-mailed to me now.
Could you please remove this post for me ?
Or at least clear out my e-mail address ?
!! Please!!!

Thanks,
DC
