XP Pro sp3 Unable to Change Read Only Folder Attribute - Help

T

Tom

We run a propriety application on XP Pro PCs but the app won't run on the
present PCs - XP Pro sp3.
I believe part of the problem is the file folders are marked 'read only'. I
log on w/ admin permissions then can unlocck the 'read ony' box bur it
really doesn't remove the 'read only folder' attribute. I've check policies
and permissions. It seems the 'read only' attribute was some how changed on
another lever.

Help!

Thanks

The read-only attribute doesn't apply to folders; it never has. If you look
more closely you will see that the box for read-only is actually greyed
out.

There is some other unrelated issue with your proprietary application and
SP3. You will need to contact the proprietary software's tech support for
resolution.

The Read Only box is filled with Green Color and when I click inside the box
the box then turn blank and I can left click and a green check mark appears.
However, when I uncheck the read only box the "apply" radio button is greyyed
out which leads me to believe there is some other security setting applied.

The box is a shortcut allowing you to set or clear the read-only
attribute for *all* files within the folder. It does not apply to the
folder itself.

The greenish fill you see when the box first appears is telling you
that it's in a neutral state: neither checked nor unchecked. As you've
seen, clicking it makes it switch to unchecked, then checked, then
back to neutral. If you click "OK" or "Apply" when it's either checked
or unchecked, the read-only attribute of all contained files will be
set accordingly.

Yes, you're correct I'll have to figure it out.
