I'm trying to enable the firewall protection on a LAN or
Internet network connection, but the option is not
enabled (it is greyed out). What's going on?

Is it possible that your LAN administrator has disabled it via a group
policy or is this a home use environment?

Well if you are using a router the router should have security built into
it. Unless you are sharing a dialup or direct connection from a PC the
firewall will not be enabled. you must also make sure the service is
enabled under RUN... services.msc... or Control Panel>>> adminstrative
tools>>services....
