i have 2 computers connected to a dlink router via nic
cards. i have an administrator account with the same
password etc. I can't seem to share files. on one
computer it sees the others files, but cannot open them.
the other computer still can't see the other's files. as
well I can't play lan games. i'm thinking it might be
the router?

Maybe, but I'll give 10:1 odds that your params are wrong.
(Hint: if either PC can see the other one, the router --
at least nominally -- works.)

Disable ICF on both XP PCs. Try it.

No joy? Then remove all other firewall and antivirus apps
temporarily. Enable TCP/IP, and disable NetBEUI and IPX/SPX
on both PCs (you may want IPX/SPX back later if your games need
it, but TCP/IP is the first choice). Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
Enable M$ client for nets, and enable file sharing. Create a
folder with a short simple folder name, give it a short simple
share name, and make sure that Everyone has full access to it.
Make sure you have identical credentials on both PCs.

No joy? Make sure you can ping-by-number and ping-by-name, from
PC-1 to itself, from PC-2 to itself, from PC-1 to PC-2 and from
PC-2 to PC-1. If ping-by-number works but ping-by-name fails, then
you have a DNS problem, so check those settings.
