XP Pro Disk Defragmenter not responding

We are running XP Pro SP2 with all updates but having scheduled Windows Disk
Defragmenter to run once a week we are advised that it did not respond.

Having selected it to run once it most times does nor respond but when it
does the defragmentation does not complete and we get "Some files on this
volume could not be defragmented". "View Report" does not respond.

Previously we ran Executive Software Diskeeper 9 Professional Edition and
found that this did not run as scheduled and that it needed to be
re-installed to operate on a once only time, it runs perfectly on our Windows
2000 Pro PC.

Does this point to an OS problem, are both applications unreliable or are we
missing something?

Go to task scheduler and see if it needs a password. For example, Norton
antivirus needs a password to run AND the user who the task is scheduled
under must be logged on (but not necessarily active). This may pertain
to diskeeper also. BTW, this is one reason I believe that a lot of
people get undetected viruses - scans are scheduled but do not run.

Hi,

Many thanks for your response. The Task Scheduler does not need a password,
our McAfee VirusScan is also scheduled, this runs OK.
The Defragmenter does not respond correctly even when it is opened from the
list of programs or its short cut.

Using Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Inf and locate dfrg.inf - Right
click the filename and choose Install. Reboot & retry Defrag.

Perfect.... my version of Windows XP suddenly, after over 3 years, developed
this symptom out of the blue. I could not find anything in the Microsoft
knowledgebase, nor could I find anything in a broader Google search. This
answer solved it inside of a few minutes. EXCELLENT! THANKS!!
