Windows Disk Defragmentation

P

Plapen

I have been trying to run the Windows Disk Defragmentation program on my
Windows XP. However, each time that I attempt this, there is an erroe
message, "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on
the volume: (C:). Please run Chkdsk /f."

I have gone to "Start/Run" and typed in "Chkdsk /f," which brings the
question, "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts? (Y/N)"

I have checked "Y" and then restarted the system. However, afterward, the
system will still not let me run the process for defragmentation. I even
downloaded a trial software for defragmentation, but received the same error
message regarding the Chkdsk, etc.

Any advice/assistance will be appreciated. Thanks.

If you get an error something to the effect "cannot open volume for direct
access" There is some system/boot start device that is reading/writing to
the drive before chkdsk can get a lock on the drive. Some anti-virus
applications do this.

After backup you can run chkdsk from the RC.

chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows XP
CD-Rom. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows
XP installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Dave,

Thank you very much for the input. About 50% of what you said is technically
above my head, but I figure if I take it one step at a time with your
instructions I should get to the resolution. Although you did not mention it
directly, I will de-activate my Symantec Norton Internet Security to see if
that helps.

There's no need. Just run from the recovery console.

restart the system and press F8 many times/choose save mode and try to do
Chkdsk /r
if ""Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use..." choose yes
If don't fix the error bytes maybe you need the chkdsk from cd xp
installation option R with the command chkdsk x: /f (where x is the letter
hhdd, if you don't change the letter x it'll check all the unit)

Have you tried rebooting into the Safe mode and run defrag from there? That
usually stops other programs from interfering with your defrag attempt.

Darrell,

You can run in safe mode and try the defrag again. Usually you can use F5 or
F8 while the computer is booting to get the options to show a boot option. I
usually just click both of them continuously until something happens.
Regardless you may also want to look at diskkeeper which is a 3rd aprty
program made by the same company who wrote the freebie that came with
windows. Executve software. The paid version is much better.
