XP Pro desktop shortcut problems

I'm having a problem with desktop shortcuts in XP Pro..
When you double click on a network drive shortcut on the
desktop XP Pro brings up the XP search for Files and
Folders window.. I have tried resetting the defaults and
have the My Computer working ok now, but the desktop
shortcuts still don't work. I tried making a new shortcut
on the desktop from My Computer (where it works fine) and
it still brings up the search page. This problem is the
same no matter who you are logged in as.(it effects all
profiles even administrator) Does anyone have any ideas,
or has anyone ever seen this problem before?

I will be running some spyware detection software this
afternoon or in the morning.
