XP Pro desktop disapears during boot

I have a laptop that when booting up the desktop apears and then disapears
completely except for the background image. It does this 2-3 times then its
gone for good. I can function through task manager however nothing else
responds. No windows key, tool bar, nothing. I removed a bunch of spyware
and the software says the machine is clean but still no desktop.

I need help with this same problem on a desktop. Happened after Adobe reader
update.

I'm not sure that will solve the issue. I noticed that in the process
section of task manager EXPLORE.EXE is not running. When I manually start it
the desktop comes back, but then the process stops again and the desktop
disappears. It will keep doing this. Now I can launch internet explorer and
that seems to force explore.exe to stay open.
