Hello, and thank you in advance to anyone who has any
insight into my problem.
XP Pro, SP1, running on a Dell Inspiron 8100, 30GHD,
512RAM, P3-1.3G
Recently upgraded from Home to Pro, as I am now developing
web pages and need IIS running (in addition to the extra
security features in Pro.)
After a clean format and install from XP Pro CD, been
having some problems with the context menu. This has
happened both before and after installing Service Pack 1.
At random intervals, when my machine tries to access the
Explorer context menu, it will randomly lock up my machine.
Total freezeup, no blue screen of death, just instant
freezing when it starts to display the context menu.
There is no pattern to when this happens; whether only one
app running or a dozen, doesnt affect this (well seemingly
anyways
)
Happens either when i rightclick on a file in an explorer
window, or first select the file and then try to open the
File menu. I have had this problem ever since i upgraded
(as a matter of fact it happened the second day of use). I
have installed quite a few apps, but this happened before i
installed them. I also three (i think) custom additions to
the context menu - two ZIP utilities (WinZip and WinRar)
and a secure-delete program called Eraser. During
installation, these programs added their commands to the
context menu.
Any ideas?
Do I simply have some random file, perhapps a DLL or
something, that may be bad?
Or is my only solution a re-install? I would like to avoid
that if possible, due to the amount of time involved.
