Well, I set the backup last night. It was screwy at best. I loaded
ntbackup off the WinXP Home cd. Created and ran a full (normal) backup of
the entire computer. Then I went into scheduled jobs to create a daily
differential backup. This is where things went screwy. I'm using an
external USB 80 GB hard drive for my backup media. It show up when
connected as drive E. When I ran the differential it began to backup the
full backup.bkf on the E drive. So I canceled it and recreated the
differential so it would not attempt to backup the backup media. But even
after doing that the differential still had to backup 400 MB of files! This
is immediately after running a NORMAL backup. I thought the differential
would have had nothing to backup since the Normal backup is supposed the
reset the archive bits on everything.

I used ntbackup with XP pro for 1½ years and it worked fine. I do not know
about ASR in home. The program I now use is TrueImage from
www.acronis.com,
it does cost, but it's worth it.

| One more question, if I may.
|
| If I use the ntbackup from the XP Home "Value added" folder, can I do an
ASR
| backup and then in a disaster reload XP Home, reload ntbackup and then do
a
| restore from the bkf file that was created ? Would this restore my system
| properly?
|
| What I'm looking for is a simple, GUI way of backing up (and restoring)
| everything except what is installed by XP Home CD by default, without
having
| to layout any extra cash.
