XP Pro and XP Home network

Hello

I used to have an XP Home to XP Home network, but one died, so I instead
have hooked up one XP Pro machine to an XP Home. THe XP Pro acts as the
server. Both have SP2 on them. I can ping both ways - but I cannot get them
to appear in the "My Network Places" area.

I know its something simple I am missing - and once I figure it out I will
be DUH! ANyone have any ideas?

Make sure the browser service is running on one computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started.

On the XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Home
and Pro together, you need to have SFS enabled.

On XP Home, and on XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest with Start - Run -
"cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

On XP Pro, if you're using Guest authentication, check your Local Security
Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment, on the
XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the network".
Make sure Guest is not in the list.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by enabling the File and
Printer Sharing exception, and / or by identifying the other computers as
present in the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall configurations are a very common
cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Once I have it working, I will turn the firewall back on.

Any other ideas? I love challenges, but as I am already getting them

I sympathise with your problem with these challenges. The whole file sharing
setup is very complex, and you've only scratched the surface.

Did you check the Local Security Policy on the XP Pro computer (very important).

If that didn't help, please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

What firewall(s) did you disable, and on which computer? Be aware that many
third party firewalls are known (see numerous examples in this newsgroup) for
not reacting properly to being disabled.
 
Still not working, after making sure everything was as you had mentioned.

I have loadead Zone alarm on both machines, but that was just this morning,
as they both are connected to the internet through a gateway. So, I have
tried doing the network with and without the firewall. If it would work
better, I can unload Zone Alarm completely until I get this working.

Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) is enabled on both computers.

Then check on the browser situation on your LAN.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window.

Please provide browstat information for each computer.

Disabling Zone Alarm may be part of the problem. You may have to un install it
completely, or re enable then properly configure it, and identify each computer
in the Local (Trusted) Zone on the ZA configuration for the other. To un

First goto control panel/network connections. Right click on loacal
area connection and choose properties. Goto the advanced tab and choose
firewall settings. On the exceptions tab verify that "File and printer
sharing" is checked. Do this on both machines.

If this doesnt allow file sharing then go to the share and right click,
choosing properties. Question one: Is there a sharing tab and a
security tab? Or just a sharing tab? Question 2: What accounts are
listed on the sharing tab (and the security tab if present)? Question
3: What permissions are granted on the sharing tab(and security if
present)?

Being able to ping but not access resources is usually a permission
thing, either fire wall, NTFS, or share permissions. Simple file adds
the everyone account which gives read access to anyone to the share. If
you have ntfs permissions set more restrictive(security tab) you will
have to add the everyone group to the shares security tab. You can
restrict which users access the shares but this is more complicated.
