XP Pro and SP2 problems.

Folks,

Just installed SP2 last night. After rebooting, I kept
getting an error message saying the RPC server terminated
and windows needed to reboot. The machine will then
reboot. I was thrown into this endless rebooting sequence.

So thinking i could fix it by turning the rpc service
off, i tried just that. went into services and disabled
rpc services. Now everything has gone haywire.

1. Taskbar is gone
2. I cant turn rpc back on because all the services (n
the service window) seem not to work. cant pull up
properties, start or anything. When i try to start the
rpc service, i get an error messge saying it cannot be
started because a device on which it depends is
unavailable or something like that.

3. when i access microsofts web site, none of the buttons
(like cliking on "GO" when doing a search) works. Even
cant expend and read newsgroups like these. I am doing
this from work right now.

4. cant uninstall sp2. I tried that from the remove
programs in control panel and it starts but stops mid way
saying " cannot find file". System restore doesnt work
either. same error message about a missing file or
service.

5. Windows firewall is also not turned on. I get a
message when trying to turn it on about a dependent ISS
servivenot being available.

Any of these problems sound familiar to anyone?

At this point, I am totally frustrated. Spent several
hours last night trying to get this to work. called tech
support for microsoft and ended up not getting anywhere.
Was told to call my computer manufacturer (Gateway) for a
fix! CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT!
SOME ONE PLEASE HELP!

try gateway. you must have an oem copy of the os, the only support that
gives you is from the manufacturer. they should have a recovery cd or
hidden partition you can use to reinstall or repair with.

I have the oem copy. But does this mean i need to
completely reinstall windows? I tried doing that too, and
i got an error messge saying i have a newer version of
windows so cant install the old one. at this point, what
exactly do i need to do to get ny pc back in the old
state - dont want sp2 anymore ...

You have the MS Blaster worm, not an SP 2 issue.

That's what I thought too, when I read that.

But how does that get to crash RPC in SP2? Isn't SP2 supposed to
include the old patches that block these RPC attackers?

I don't think so (not sure). I though SP2 is a security enhancement with
wireless networking enhancements as well. I don't think it has the previous
patches rolled up into it.

Hi

This is incorrect, SP2 includes all previous updates from the day
Windows XP was released.

WinXP SP2 is immune to the Blaster worm.

no, you had to click one more time to get to:

i only remember one time when a sp from ms didn't include all the previous
updates, that was for office 97 i think where they required you to install
sp1 before you could install sp2 or something like that.

If the RPC service doesn't start, nothing will work right
because everything is dependant on it. I'm dealing with
the same issue. What I've found is that by default it's
set to start with the logon of "NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK
SERVICE". My problem is that NOTHING will start under
that logon. It has to be changed to "LOCAL SYSTEM"

If RPC is not running, the only way to fix it is to do it
through REGEDIT. Open the registry editor and change the
service logon to "localsystem". Then reboot. That will
apply a bandaid fix allowing RPC to start, if your issue
is the same as mine.

Danged if I can find out what's wrong with NETWORK
SERVICE tho... and how to fix it. Tech support is stumped.
