XP perisistent insistent unwanted dialup

I had to re-instal my XP home in my new 2.4mhz/256 mb system networked to my
old w98se system. First time round I was bedevilled by the subject
roblem - I did a whole lot of different things and the problem wasn't there
any longer.
Now I'm some days into my re-install, and the wretched problem is back, so
badly that I simply have to disconnect the line from my system so I can work
in peace.

Please somebody help me with this problem.

BTW the Windows Update service, tells me there are about 16 different
updates I should install; can this be right? It'll take aabout a week to
download 'em all . . .

It sounds like you have some spyware or a virus. Scan for spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). Scan with a current (post-2002 version)
antivirus using updated definitions. Check around on your system to see
what is set to automatically update - you could have legitimate but
invasive programs like RealOne trying to check for updates. As for
Windows Update, most definitely you should install the security
updates. Yes, there are a lot of them. I just did this for a client
yesterday and there were over 20MB of patches and more for his MS
Office installation. Perhaps you have a friend with broadband who would
be willing to download the updates for you and burn them to cd-r.

Hi,

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up
Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off
always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

You can delete any TCP/IP addresses that you see under this key. Note that
AutoDial can use IP addresses, DNS fully qualified domain names (FQDN), and
NetBIOS names.

For your latter mention, hard to tell.
