Unwanted reboot

My computer reboots unexpectedly, and randomly, while using it. I will be
typing on something and the computer will just re-start with no warning! It
does not shut down or stall, it just goes directly into start-up mode as if I
pressed the re-start button. It does not appear to make any difference which
program is being used at the time, or what you are doing when it happens.
Sometimes I does it while just sitting idle.

I have installed a new motherboard (ABIT IC7-G), and they insist that the
problem is in the windows operating system - I tend to agree since I have
exchanged the motherboard once with no difference in results. Also, ABIT
says they have never had this issue reported before.

I have also re-loaded Windows XP several times, both with and without SP2, I
even used a windows XP SP2 slipstream disk to see if that made any
difference. I have tried several installs both onto two different hard
drives, with complete reformatting and repair installations – nothing seems
to work or make any difference.

The computer works fine in all other aspects. Does anyone have any ideas on
this?

To stop the reboots right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab,
Under Startup and Recovery click Settings, under system Failure uncheck
Automatically restart. Next time the PC crashes you'll get a blue screen
with a detailed error message, write it down and post it in its entirety.

What kind of power supply you have? I have the ABIT IC7, and insufficient
power will definitely cause random reboots. It is a possible cause of your
problem, but not the only one. Do you have any power draining devices? Such
as a Video Card that requires its own power connector? Do you have 4 IDE
devices? Are you overclocking your P4 CPU?

Another thing to check out is make sure you do not have any virus on your
pc. Update and scan your AV software.

Thats as good as I can think of now.
