XP & password

Rodney Chelius

I am looking for the ability to password protect my
computer when I leave my computer. I was thinking if a
password protected screensaver exist, that would foot the
bill. Or a macro key to launch password protection. I DO
NOT want to have to log on to the computer with a
password.
I run Windows XP Professional(OEM), SP1. Any ideas? Thank
you.

Rodney;
You can set the screensaver to send you to the welcome screen but that
is not a screensaver password.

The password to log into the computer is what you need.
Why don't you want to use login password as intended?

I don't want to use the login password because I am the
only one that uses my computer. I guess I am lazy. I just
needed a way to lock the computer when I am away from it
so the grandkids don't get distrucktive fingers (they
have in the past). Thank you for the help.

I guess I don't understand.
You use a password for the screensaver or you need a login password.
Either way it is a password.
Login only takes a few seconds.

It almost sounds like you only need to lock the door to the computer
room.

What he needs is a secret key combination that will lock and unlock the
comuputer. Is there anything that will do this? I'm thinking of a
script of some kind...

Exactly, something simple. If I set up LOGON, LOGOFF,
Windows, Privacy Service, I end up signing in and out
until I am ready to turn them all off as I have now. I am
looking for something simple to lock the computer while I
am away for short periods of time. Thank you.

There may be something but I am not aware of it.
You may want to search Google, possibly a 3rd party application.

Wouldn't a short simple password work just as well?

By the time the OP's read and replied to all this, he could have set several
up!

Thank you for helping out. I'll keep my ear to the
ground, and continue to look around. I have already
googled, etc., again thank you.

To password protect your screensaver
To use a password-protecte
screen saver (Right-Click on the Desktop, Properties > Screen Saver > O
resume, password protect) for your account. If you're going to go away fro
the computer you can use WinKey + L (Windows Lock) to bring up the passwor
box immediately, without needing to wait the 10 minutes or whatever for th
screensaver to come on.

To make it so you dont have to type in your password, try control panel>user accounts> user accounts> change the way people log on> and uncheck the welcome screen. don't know if this will work .. but you can try it.

If it doesn't, I think it's because MS realized screensaver pw's were useless if you could just restart without being prompted for a password.

Good luc
