XP on a domain

How is it that aN XP Pro laptop configured for a workgroup can use services
on a Windows 2000 Server network? I thought if you were set up as a
workgroup PC you couldn't use a domain. I just saw a laptop that is setup as
a workgroup gain access to files, the internet and printers on a Windows 2000
Server, which is a domain controller. This person uses 2 networks, one is a
workgroup, the other a domain. He is able to use services on both. Is there
a white paper out there somewhere that explains how this is possible?

Thanks.

The only difference between a workgroup and domain is the type of administration. In a
workgroup, access is controlled individually on each machine. In a domain, that is controlled
in a central location.

Depending on how you configure the resources on domain servers/clients, if that is set to
allow all, then any machine, member of the domain or not, can access those shares.

You can find all the info you want at:
