I understand that an oem version of windows xp can only
be installed on one computer, but what if in the future i
decide to make upgrades to that computer and windows
verification causes problems. Can i reinstall that oem
version on the same computer with a new product key or
what?

You can resinstall and reactivate as often as necessary or
desired.

Greetings --

Having an OEM license doesn't normally hinder your upgrading the
PC later on.

Hi,
With OEM versions have limitations in the ability to install as an
upgrade. You can only do clean install but upgrades are not possible.

_H/W_ upgrades not possible?

You can upgrade all the hardware you want, as long as the system is
considered the same system WRT to the license. That consideration is
generally up to the manufacturer of the system. If you want to run XP
on an existing system you bought, and eventually uograde the
motherboard, you might be better of with the full retail install.

Greetings --

No, you can perform upgrade your hardware whilst using an OEM
license. The only catch would be if you had a BIOS-locked version,
you wouldn't be able to replace the motherboard, unless it's the same
brand/model.

What was meant is that an OEM CD cannot be used to perform an
upgrade of an earlier OS, as it was designed to be installed _only_
upon an empty hard drive.

or Microsoft if you built it yourself using the MS branded OEM CD.

In that case, YOU are the OEM, and decide when it ceases being the
original PC.

Is that really correct? I think the activation system will have something to
say about it as well. Microsoft has published articles explaining how much
you can change before the activation system decides it's not the same PC
anymore.

The activation system won't care, unless your Mobo components count
for more than enough votes to trigger re-activation.

That might be true, but you can always do the phone call.
Also the MS computers dump old activation data every 120
days.
