XP & Novell Incompatibility

Hope I am posting this in the right place; if not
please accept my appologies.

Networking virgin here ...

I develop software for small businesses and
just assume the network is working. I have
a few clients with Windows Servers (Win 2000, I think)
and I merely have them create a user name for
me with a password (but most of em leave it
at "password"); I plug in the cable and am
off and running. Everything is FINE ... that is
until I ran into Novell Netware . What a
b*^ch.

Anyway, I was setup on this Novell Netware
network by a new client ... before I allowed the
"network guy" to mess with my machine I ask
several times if it would impact my Win Server
business. Being assured it would not affect my Win 2000
Server network setups, I allowed "network guy" to
do his "Novell thing" on my machine. BIG MISTAKE -

Anyway, long story short
next time I went to a Win 2000 Server client, I could
not get onto their network ... "network not available"
or something like that.

Well, I uninstalled the Novell Netware Client, just knowing
this would fix the problem ... It did not. Can anyone tell
me how to get my machine back to the point where it
recognizes the existence of a Win Server.

I am running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Laptop
Insprion 8200.

Thanking you in advance,
Bob in Atlanta

Netware client allows you to logon on to a Novell Server providing
authentication services to clients. If you are connected to a Novell Server
for authentication you need the client to Logon. If your authentication
server is a Windows Server than you need to use the windows client. The
business I'm in uses Novell authentication and windows servers for
applications. In-other words once I logon through the Novell logon it gets
me to every server Novell, GroupWise, Windows and Linux I have permisson on.
Your "network guy" apparently (I assume) didn't test the connection to all
of your servers or you are using a laptop at home without a connection to
the server in which case you should check the connect to workstation only
when loging in through the Novell client. Our workstations have a mix of
OSs Windows NT4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional. Our DB experts
(Oracle) and developers (Powerbuilder) use the same OSs and connectivity.
However when the take the laptop home they connect to the servers using
Citrix.

Thanks Philippe -

The Novell server was at one physical location and the
Windows server, which I cannot signon now, is at
another location ... a completely different network, not
related in anyway. I think this Netware client has
messed up my protocol, since when I try to use a
Windows server I get a "network not found" message.

And you are right ... "network guy" did not test anything ...
and worse than that he left for Colombia (the country) for
three months shortly thereafter. $#)#@(*

Re-install the Novell client, latest version (4.90sp1) but do NOT do a
"Typical" install, use Custom and select only the protocols you need
(those used on the Novell server), i.e. IP only, IPX only, or IP and IPX
if needed.

Also, if there was previously installed the Microsoft Client for Novell
Networks and the Novell client was installed over the top of it then
you've got a hybrid of both because a bug in the MS client for Novell
code does not allow it to be removed automatically when installing the
Novell client. To correct this, uninstall the Novell client, reboot,
install the MS client for Novell, reboot, uninstall the MS Client for
Novell, reboot, re-install the Novell client, reboot.

You should aslo check out the Novell support forums, there is one
dedictated to WinNT/2K/XP client and very knowledgable people there.
