XP - not suitable ?

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 with ME (+ Dell LCD monitor that came with it).
I just bought a retail copy of Win Xp Prof and installed into the pc and it
seems to work fine apart from:-

a) In the Device Manager - other devices (open up 'unsupported devices')
b) The appearance on the monitor seems reddish and when I check Display
Properties>setting
(I downloaded/installed the driver from Nvidia 2mx/mx400 and the appearance
still remains the same)

"Display Dell 1503FP (analog) on Nvidia GeForce 2MX/MX400'
Colour quality:Highest (32 bits) // Medium (16 bits)

In the pc, these are the devices attached:- kb/mouse/floppy/cd rom/graphic
card/ sound card (Creative audio)/lan (Reltek RTL8139.

My questions are 1/ why the monitor appears in such odd colour
2/ why does it show 'unsupported devices"
Does this means the hardwre is 'too old' for win xp? Thanks for sharing your
knowledge.

The unsupported items are items XP probably does not have drivers for.
If it were a modem and you don't use the modem then who cares.
XP does not support my dell network card. So I have to load the
drivers, I got them from dell, but if I stick with my wireless 100% of
the time I could just not load it.

Eliminate the items you have that work. Nic card etc.
Then go to dell's web site, locate the drivers for your PC and your OS
and download any that you don't already have. Heck download everything
and put them all on a CD rom for later. Just in case. Hopefully Dell
supports your adventure into XP for that PC.

Unfortunately those unsupported items don't give you much info for the
layman. Maybe there is someone (and it would be fun to know) that has a
tool / website that can make heads of those facts they display, but I
never can. I just know the hardware that is in my pc and I know what
is working and through process of elimination I can tell what I need to
load. You have to play detective a bit.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

Display Properties>Settings>Advanced>Adapter-
What do I do with the Adapter 'list of modes'. Do I change the listed until
the desktop appears normal? TIA

You can play with them. I don't like to because if you get in a mode
that screws your display, you can't see anything. But safe mode might
allow you to fix it back. My list only shows different resolution and
color depth. Nothing I can't do on the standard settings page.
Probably why I've never been there.

Please name the 'unsupported devices".

In the Device Manager - thats what is what it says "unsupported device" and I
did not add any devices to the original system, TIA

Right click on the device in Device Manager and select properties. There
are several tabs on the properties page. On the Details tab you will see
some identification strings. Post those back.

Right click the unsupported device in Device Manager>details shows the
following
?Unsupported device and in the box below it says" Device Instance Id" and in
another box below it says 'ACPI\Mgmt 180\2&DABA3FF&O"

In DM-Display > Dell 1503 FP (analog)
In Display Properties>Setting>Advance - shows Dell1503FP (analog) in Nvida
GeForce2 MX/MX400

Advance>Adapter:-shows Nvida
Monitor:-shows Dell 1503FP (analog)

DELL 1503 FP - Dell only have up to Win2000 drivers and there is no XP
driver. So could this be the reason for such appearence of the monitor
colour? Many thanks for all your responses.

Are you sure that your monitor is not defective. Try using another monitor
if possible. Or perhaps you can hook up your monitor to another computer and
see if it is ok. Just a thought. This would not solve your other problems,
just
one.
