xp not recognizing new hardware

just got computer back from shop... was infected and now clean... now does
not recognize printer. (program uninstalled and am attempting to
reinstall..) so when plugged into usb port, xp doesn't recognize new
hardware device. i have plugged into portable laptop, this machine
recognizes the new hardware device and printer works from friends laptop..
any ideas??

if you have any discs that came with the printer load the software from the
disc before plugging into usb port
