XP No Communicate

Hi, I hope you are all doing well.

I have new Dell XP machine I'm trying to connect to old no-name W98 PC (not
SE).

I've tried everything I can think of to get the two networked together but
nothing works. If I use hub to connect the two I get the infamous network
connection weak and may / may not work. If I use cross overcabel between the
two I get good connection but can't get them to network.

I've preset IP address, etc but that no workee either.

Anyone got any suggestions besides making boat anchor out of W98 machine.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ken

You'll want to create an account (Control Panel|User Accounts) on the
Windows XP machine with the username and password that you use to logon to
the win9x machine(s) with. Then you'll need to share out the resource(s)
with permissions for those users. Also make sure they're all part of the
same workgroup, on the same subnet, then turn off the XP firewall and enable
NetBIOS over tcp/ip. Then you'll no longer be prompted for the IPC$ password
Inter-process communication)

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
NT/2000/XP/2003 machine, Windows needs to authenticate the user. If the user
account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then access will be
denied.

Hi Dave, I hope all is well with you.

I did the following and was able to see the shared folders on the XP machine
but not the other PC:

- I created the user account from W98 PC on XP PC. I created an account for
the name that appears in the logon screen.
- I found I forgot to uncheck the Antivirus firewall so I unchecked that.
- I added the following:
-- IP Address 10.1.1.1 (.2 to W98 PC)
-- Subnet - 255.0.0.0
-- Default Gateway 223.0.0.0

After entering the IP, subnet and DG, I find my connection on the XP machine
goes from limited connectivity to full connectivity. When I click on View
Workgroup Computers, I now can see the shared folders on XP machine, but
still not W98 PC. Is there anything else you can think of I might need to do.
By the way, I enabled NetBios over TCP/IP.

Thanks a bunch and have a great day.

Probably best to leave the default gateway blank on both machines. Can you
ping the machine by name? by IP address?

I forgot to try that today, but will. Is there any clue I should be looking
for when I try to ping the machines and nothing happens?

Incorrect network adapter configuration. Bad hardware. If you can ping the
win9x machine then try connecting to the share by IP address. Something
like;
\\10.1.1.2\sharename

What's strange about this situation is I have two of the same Dell PC's I
can't connect to the network. The networks are separate networks and I am
having same problem with both PC's.

Dave, as I mention after this msg, I have 3 XP SP2 machines I'm having same
problem with. Two are on workgroups and one on domain. I'm at domain locn now
and I have:

Disabled Norton AV firewall and Windows firewall.

I have uninstalled NIC and reinstalled. I also added a PCI NIC to the PC
with no luck. It now removed.

I can ping the domain server by address but not by name.

I can't ping XP SP2 PC by name or IP (IP is 192.168.200.174.

Subnet is 255.255.255.0.

I've tried over and over again to create the network connection but get the
can't find DOMAIN message.

I hope this helps. Looks like I'm going to have to call in a Dell trouble
call.

Does any of this help?

Hi Dave,
I found that if I go to START,RUN and type in IP address of SQLServer I can
access server, but I can't access server or servers for that matter using
server name. When I use IP address (\\192.168.200.3) I can connect and view
folders/install programs, etc.
But still can't set up network connection on domain. I hope this helps.

Check your DNS settings.

Sounds like incorrect or missing DNS server IP addresses.
