How can I connect 2 laptops after they have disconnected from a domain so
that they can share files. I am using a cross-over and an logging on as the
same user id as they did when connected to server

Can you ping one from the other? If so, then you have connectivity.

If you can't ping one from the other, provide ipconfig information for each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

If you have connectivity, but you can't see each computer from the other, look
in Network Neighborhood / My Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows
Network, and see if they're visible there.

If it is WinXP you can use the alternate TCP/IP settings to configure the
computers as a peer to peer network.
