XP networking help reqd

Hi,

I hope someone can help or point me at a website that can.

I'm getting a router next week but before then I need to network 2 pc's
(both running XP) with a direct cable connection.

PC1 is connected to ADSL via a modem and is running Norton Internet Security
2005. I have a fixed IP address of 192.168.0.1. I have also set NIS to allow
192.168.0.2

PC2 has a fixed IP of 192.168.0.2

PC1 can ping PC2 but not the other way round. PC2 cannot see PC1 using
Windows explorer. File sharing is set up on both.

What have I missed?

Thanks for any help.

Your first step should always be to turn off any firewalls you have
while you're testing. The problem you describe is almost always
caused by a firewall.

The next step is to ping by IP address, not by NetBIOS name.

Under Win2000/XP you can make the network status indicator
visible in the System Tray. This lets you do some very simple
diagnostic tests. If a firewall is active on the pinged PC then
you can see packets arrive but none will be sent back to the
pinging PC.

Thanks Pegasus for replying and you are right. Even though I had added the
second IP address as 'trusted' in NIS it only worked once the NIS firewall
was disabled. I have now uninstalled NIS and will use other software.
