We recently installed 6 new Dell computers on our
existing peer to peer network at our High School. The
computers came loaded with Windows XP and Norton Internet
Security 2003. Existing computers on the network are
loaded with Windows 98, 2000 and Millennium. We have 4
workgroups built into the network.

When trying to view the network over the XP stations, we
can only see the XP computers and can only ping our
Internet gateway router. We cannot even ping
ourselves. We can access the internet.

If we disable Norton Internet Security, we can access
most of entire network, workgroups and ping all
computers. If we then disable the XP internet firewall,
we can view and ping the entire network.

We cannot find any references to this issue. We're
looking for some help.

Hi, Fred. You should not have any firewalls activated for the *internal*
network. Your firewalling should only be at the gateway. In your
situation, I would have antivirus on each machine because you never
know who's going to bring in an infected floppy from home, but no
firewalls. Also, check your dns settings. You don't mention the server
setup, but if you only have one server, it should be looking to itself
for dns, with an additional different gateway set for the Internet. All
the workstations should be getting their dns from the server, with
their gateways set to the Internet router. If you want help, then
please post back with your network setup; i.e., how many servers, what
os's, routers, switches, that sort of thing. We have 46 Dell boxen in
the computer lab and about 45 more assorted boxen in the classrooms at
my kid's school - St. Anthony's School. If you'd like some tips on
filtering, set up, etc. I'm sure we'd be happy to share the knowledge.

Cheers,

Malke

in the symantec security settings click personal firewall, home networking,
and add the ip address of each pc on the network. I had to do this with the
2 clients in my house. I cheated a little and used an ip range to make it
easier.
