Lost my view of Network Places

G

Guest

We have a workgroup of 10 - 15 systems all running XP Pro. DHCP comes from a
Linksys router and up until last week everything worked fine as in I could go
and browse the network resources through Network Places. After adding a
couple of new systems none of the workgroup can view the network any more.
All the shares work and I can ping the other workstations but cannot view the
workgroup. Also, when I click on Microsoft Windows Network it takes a long
time to display the workgroup name and when I click on the workgroup it will
not load. I get the 'workgroup not available' error message. Any help is
greatly appreciated.

Additional Info:

If I log on to the domain server I can view all workgroups in our network.
I can also view the workstations in the other workgroups with the exception
of the workgroup that is causing me this problem. When I try to view the
workstations in that particular workgroup I get the same error as I do when
trying to access from members of that workgroup.

<talking to myself> KISS, keep it simple stooge.... start with the
basics...</talking to myself>

Bad cables? Bad switch?? Switch powered on? Uplink port incorrect?

seems like you're having a segment issue.... anyone else?

Thanks for the reply. I have not lost any functionality of the workgroup in
as much that all my shares are still available. I am just not able to browse.

Ok well, you've said enough there... it's probably the NetBIOS isn't
enabled on the machines you can't see... either that of it's an
account issue....

All the systems on this workgroup were available until a couple of days ago.
I did check to make sure that netBios is enabled and there have been no
changes to any part of the network configuration that I am aware of.

Does this help: I can access new shares using the IP of the system with the
share but not using the computer name

It sounds like a Master Browser issue. Look in the Event Log for
relevant errors.

From all my searching I have yet to be able to figure out how to troubleshoot
the master browser issue.

Below are the only two error messages I get in my server event log:
========================
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5781
Date: 5/8/2007
Time: 1:02:48 PM
User: N/A
Computer: ********** (intentionally blocked)
Description:
Dynamic registration or deletion of one or more DNS records associated with
DNS domain 'cgbevcorners.cgoffice.com.' failed. These records are used by
other computers to locate this server as a domain controller (if the
specified domain is an Active Directory domain) or as an LDAP server (if the
specified domain is an application partition).

Possible causes of failure include:
- TCP/IP properties of the network connections of this computer contain
wrong IP address(es) of the preferred and alternate DNS servers
- Specified preferred and alternate DNS servers are not running
- DNS server(s) primary for the records to be registered is not running
- Preferred or alternate DNS servers are configured with wrong root hints
- Parent DNS zone contains incorrect delegation to the child zone
authoritative for the DNS records that failed registration

USER ACTION
Fix possible misconfiguration(s) specified above and initiate registration
or deletion of the DNS records by running 'nltest.exe /dsregdns' from the
command prompt or by restarting Net Logon service. Nltest.exe is available in
the Microsoft Windows Server Resource Kit CD.

On the new machines that you installed verify/disable the Master Browser
role and see what happens. The Master Browser role is disabled at:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters]
"MaintainServerList"="Auto"
"IsDomainMaster"="FALSE"

(Typical values shown above)

To prevent Workstations from becoming Master Browsers set the
IsDomainMaster value to false.

If the workstations are constantly causing trouble or if they are
laptops/portables or machines that are frequently turned off set the
MaintainServerList value to No. Those machines should not have any
Master or Backup Browser duties.
