Hi

I am trying to setup a network with a pc and laptop both have xp home.
I have gone through the network wizard but the computers will not link.

Both pc's are using built in network cards and even though the cables are
connected and
the cable has been tested as working both machines say that the network
cable is unplugged.
NB: I am not using a hub or switch

Please can some one assist me as its driving me mad.?

Thanks

John

First of all, are you using a crossover cable? A standard straight through
patch cable cannot be used to directly connect 2 PCs together. If not, you
will need to make/buy one with pin connections as follows:
1 - 3, 2 - 6, 3 - 1, 4 - 4, 5 - 5, 6 - 2, 7 - 7, 8 - 8

I've also seen problems with crossover cables where both NICs are set to
'Autosense' the network speed. Try setting the speed of both network
adapters to 100 Mbps Half duplex.

Are you actually using a *cross-over* cable?
Or is it perhaps a straight-thru cable?

/daytripper (hint: you need the former)

Hi Stace

Yes I am using a Cat5e patch cable i made up, so I need a crossover cable
then?
What if i put it through a small hub, could I use a patch cable then?

Thanks

John

If you use a hub you don't need crossover cables - just use standard patch
leads for both machines.
