XP Network DNS Trouble

P

Paula

I have an existing network of three XP Home computers
connected using a 3com office connect 8 port hub. Hub
goes to DSL modem, all works fine - including internet. I
added another XP Home machine. It can see the other
computers and be seen by them, but when I try to connect
to the Internet, I get a DNS error. I am using static IP
addresses and information from the DSL provider, just
like on the the other machines. What step am I missing on
the new computer?

Thanks.

Do you mean that you have static IP from your isp? Most people would be getting a dynamic IP. Are you staticly entering the IP and dns info on the computers? Are you paying for the additional IPs needed fro each computer. If you had a router instead of a hub then you would only need 1. What are the IP's and dns settings fo all the computers?

Thanks for answering Bob. The IPs are dynamic and we have 5 of them.
IPs: 67.112.105.250 - 255
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.248
Default gateway: 67.112.105.249
Primary DNS: 206.13.31.12
Alternate DNS: 206.13.28.12
This computer is IP 67.112.105.254.

Power down the modem by removing the power adapter. Wait five minutes.
Power it back up. The modem has a cache of connected MAC addresses, and
when it gets full, nothing more will connect. Power cycling the modem
clears the cache and lets five to seven MAC addresses connect to the
modem.

I recently had a similar problem:

I have Xp Home on my laptop which is connected to a router with DSL
internet connection. After I installed a Wireless LAN card I was
unable to view any webpages. I could ping the other PCs in the network
and websevers by their IP but everything invloving domain names
failed.

Any idea what might had happened there and how I can fix that? BTW
after some hours of trying a just reset the PC using System Restore
and now it functions just like before.
