XP & monitors

I was asked by a friend to install her copy of xp for her, it was left with
me and this was carried out. When returned & connected to her monitor it
would boot, display the splash screen, flicker briefly and display nothing
else.

So im wondering if monitors have some sort of file which needs to be
installed for them to work, as it works with my monitor and not hers.

I have tried a few things and it can only be the monitor, it can't be the
graphics controller as it booted up after i installed it, the only difference
in hardware being the monitor.

Her computer & monitor are fairly old.
The monitor is a 'Targa' with model number 'TM3611PNLD'
The graphics controller is an old 'Intel(r) 82810E.

Thanks for any help.
Andrew.

You probably have the display resolution set too high for her old
monitor. Go into Safe Mode and set the computer to run in Base Video
(VGA):

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]
Click the BOOT.INI tab.
Under Boot Options, check "/BASEVIDEO" and then OK.
Reboot the computer as prompted into Regular Mode.

Now go to the Display applet and set the resolution to something you
know her monitor can handle, perhaps 800 x 600.

If that works, run msconfig again and remove the check for /BASEVIDEO.

Get her a new monitor, as that's a 14" not worth to have. It can do only
800*600/75Hz , 1024*768/60Hz max.
Used, working 17" that can do at least 1024*768/75Hz and up can be had (if
found) for ~nothing

Andrew.

It could be too old for plug-and-pray and XP is trying to put it in an
unsupported mode.

Got a monitor you can stick on the box to see what mode it's in?
