I've been running Windows XP SP1 on a 2.8Ghz HT P4 with 2G
of DDR400 Dual Channel RAM for about 6 months now. I
disable the paging file when I first installed XP.
I have never seen my available memory drop below about
1.1GB, no matter how many apps I have running, even
burning DVDs or playing memory-hungry 3D games.
Does anyone know the answers to these questions:
1 - Is XP capable of using (effectively) more than 1GB of
RAM?
2 - In spite of the paging file being off, Task Manager /
Performance tab shows much of the kernel as "Paged". Does
turning off the paging file really do anything? I was
just burning a DVD and it sure seems I saw the signs of
paging like I used to see with Windows 2000 and 512M of
RAM, even though available RAM was showing as 1.25GB.
TIA.
