I have a new computer with Windows XP Media Edition. My old hard drive
is bad so I am trying to get the data off the drive but when I start
the computer it always wants to run chkdsk on the bad drive and does
not give me an option to stop it. It always fails before it finishes
so by the time I get into Windows the drive is not accessible. Is
there a way in this edition to prevent chkdsk from running on startup?

Thanks.

When Chkdsk starts, it initially offers the option of canceling the
scan. All you should need to do is press any key when prompted. Mind
you, this doesn't do anything to ensure that the defective drive will be
accessible. In fact, if Chkdsk can't finish, odds are that the drive is
too far gone, and you'll not be able to recover anything from it using
built-in Windows tools. You might try booting the PC using one of the
many CD-based recovery methods (BartsPE, Suse Linux 10, etc) that don't
require installation to backup/recover your data files.

The option to stop chkdsk is not offered in the XP Media Edition of
windows-it just starts right away without the option to press a key to
bypass. I have a program to revover the data, all I need is for
windows XP to boot without chkdsk running.
