XP/me upgrade Install takes too long

Can some one tell me how long it should take to do an
upgrade. I am trying to upgrade from ME to XP home but the
install seem to be taking an extraodinary long
time.Myfirst attempt took approx 3 hrs, only to get to the
setup compatability report. This gives no option to
uninstall any offending software/hardware without exiting
setup. The second attempt after uninstalling the
software/hardware never even got to the report after 4
hrs. Also in the "intruction booklet" that came with the
upgrade it doesnt tell you that you may not have to
uninstall anything that it may only need a driver update
once the install is complete.

Normally it shouldn'r take more than 45 minutes start to finish. It can take
longer on a lare disk or a disk full of software if the chkdsk takes a long
time but the times your posting indicate a problem with the install.
If all your documents etc. are backed up and you have the disks to reinstall
all your programs I would suggest a clean install. You can achieve this
through the XP CD by deleting the partition and recreating it. The install
will format automatically.

What are your system specs? A typical install/upgrade should take 45 - 60
mins. Did you do a decent system cleanup prior to upgrading? For example
you should run Disk Cleanup, empty Temp folders, uninstall disk maintenance
apps like Norton SystemWorks, GoBack, anything that might guard files.
Disable System Restore on an Me system as the Restore Points won't make the
upgrade but take up space. Uninstall all CD Burning software too. Run Defrag
then try an upgrade.

Flaky RAM can be a major reason why installs of XP hang. RAM that seems fine
with Windows 9x/Me and even NT/2000 can crap out when it comes to and XP
install.

Myfirst attempt took approx 3 hrs, only to get to the
setup compatability report.

Did the compatibility report appear? If yes, did it mention any problems?
May want to try running the compatibility wizard before trying the upgrade
again. On the screen that appears when you first insert the XP CD, you can
select to run this tool.
