Can anybody give me an idea as to why the XP logon screen
shows the wrong number of unread Outlook messages?

It tells me that there are at least 10 more messages in
my Inbox than there actually are!!!

If you have many emails not read in your inbox you may
have to scroll down to the bottom of the list to see the
other un-read mail. Try scolling down to see if you have
more email than your display can handle.

Outlook and that number have nothing to do with each other. Outlook Express
and Windows Messenger accessing Hotmail or MSN are the two programs that
update that number. See http://support.microsoft.com/?id=304148

But Outlook Express is part of Outlook nnnn. The number displayed is taken
from Outlook or MSN Messenger. The miscount can occur and will probably
straighten out over time. The figure can also be reset by installing the
TweakUI Power toy from Microsoft and it is under the Repair option.

No. They're completely different products, but Outlook requires Outlook
Express to be installed. Apparently, they share some underlying functions.
One thing they do not share, however, is the ability to update the Welcome
screen mail count. So says Microsoft.
